Some women may experience bleeding during pregnancy. Although some may think that they have period while pregnant, it is not possible to have period while pregnant. This bleeding is due to many factors during pregnancy.
Some pregnant woman may experience bleeding in the early stages of their pregnancy while some may also experience this bleeding on the late part of their pregnancy which is a sign of some serious conditions and pregnancy problems. This bleeding may occur regularly that is why pregnant women mistaken the bleeding for period while pregnant.

Symptoms
Symptoms of having a period while pregnant range from light spotting, to a heavier flow like a regular period while pregnant. While it is nearly impossible to have a real period while pregnant and stay pregnant, you may notice that you need to use feminine protection for the first few months of your pregnancy, while your body acclimates to the excess hormones and carrying the baby. Your bleeding may be accompanied by cramps and other regular period while pregnant. A light red, pink or even brownish blood is normal, while bright red blood should be reported to your doctor.
What are the Causes?
Here are some of the causes that could result to bleeding during pregnancy:
Miscarriage – miscarriage could cause bleeding and usually occur during the first trimester of the pregnancy. Aside from bleeding, pregnant women may also feel lower abdominal pain and passing of tissue and clots through the vagina.
Ectopic Pregnancy – this medical emergency during pregnancy is one of the common causes of bleeding or period while pregnant. Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the implantation occurs outside the uterus. Aside from vaginal bleeding,period while pregnant women experiencing ectopic pregnancy may also suffer from sharp pain in the lower abdominal area.
Molar Pregnancies – this type of pregnancy also causes vaginal bleeding mistaken for period while pregnant. This is a serious condition and you must seek doctor’s help. Also known as gestational trophoblastic disease, this condition can result to abnormal high levels of hCG and aside from vaginal bleeding, other symptoms of molar pregnancy are lack of fetal heart tone and clusters of tissues in grape-shape which are visible in the ultrasound.
Implantation Pregnancy – implantation is one of the common causes of bleeding during pregnancy which women usually mistake for period while pregnant. This usually occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy. Implantation is the process wherein the fertilized egg burrows into the lining of the uterus after conception and usually occurs 10 to 14 days after conception. Implantation of the fertilized eggs to the uterus causes the bleeding that resembles a light period making pregnant women think that they have period while pregnant.
Placental Abruption – this usually happens in the last trimester of pregnancy and can cause vaginal bleeding. This happens when the placenta detaches from the uterine wall before the delivery. Pregnant women with placental abruption may also suffer from intense pain in the stomach. Placental abruption usually happens to period while pregnant women who are over the age 35, usage of cocaine during pregnancy, high blood pressure and sickle-cell anemia.
Other common causes of period while pregnant or vaginal bleeding, are Placenta Previa, infection, cervical irritation, preterm labor and cervical growth.
Call the doctor immediately if your bleeding starts abruptly and continues with a flow that is even heavier than one of your normal period while pregnant, especially if it is accompanied by tightening and cramping in your abdomen. This indicates a miscarriage and you’ll need to be seen. If it is light spotting, then you don’t need to contact your doctor, just wait until your next appointment with your obstetrician and mention it. Chances are it is completely normal. However, if you are soaking through a pad in an hour or less with bright red blood, call your doctor immediately.
